State Preserves & Crosstown Parkway
The Alliance fought for nearly two decades to stop the Crosstown Parkway in Port St. Lucie from being built through the Savannas Preserve State Park (SPSP) marshland and the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserve, the Halpatokee Buffer State Preserve, (now managed by SPSP) and the North Fork of the St. Lucie River Aquatic Preserve. Notice the number of times “Preserve” is in the name of these parklands.
We believe that state parks are not areas held in reserve for local municipalities to use as their growth and development run out of room. We are fiercely dedicated to the idea that the myriads of species in our parks should have the right to their habitat, as well as the right of future human generations to delight in the ecological integrity and beauty of the Preserves that we have enjoyed. |
This is a fascinating tale, with much political intrigue. We share it so all can learn from our long-fought battles, which have only been partly successful. The Indian River Lagoon AP and the SPSP marshland have been saved from the Crosstown Parkway - for now. Without constant oversight even that success could be reversed.
